How to Learn Reiki

What are the Reiki Manuals?

There is no standard or reference Reiki manual to learn Reiki from: each Reiki teacher or student may create their own. And make it publicly available, or sell it on Amazon.

In the study of Reiki, for a Reiki certification, there are basically three main levels. Each may be separated into a manual, or they may all be combined into a unique manual. Or combine only the first two levels into a manual on its own.

  1. Reiki Level 1 – also known as 1st degree Reiki, or Shoden (in Japanese), it teaches the Reiki origins and history, and the hand positions for self-healing Reiki. You learn fundamentals about the Reiki energy and practice the five Reiki principles before getting your first attunements from your Reiki Master/Teacher. You can already start practicing Reiki on yourself and people you know, after the course.
  2. Reiki Level 2 – also known as 2nd degree Reiki, or Okuden (in Japanese), it teaches the first three Reiki symbols, the distant Reiki techniques and how to practice Reiki on others. You may qualify as a Reiki practitioner once you take this course, and you may start to practice Reiki on others.
  3. Reiki Level 3 (Master) – also known as Shinpiden (in Japanese), it teaches you the fourth Reiki Master symbol, and how to give attunements to others. The level will qualify you as a Reiki Master/Teacher, and is frequently split up into two stages:
    • Advanced Reiki Techniques (ART) – also known as 3rd degree Reiki, or IIIa.
    • Master Teacher – also known as 4th degree Reiki, or IIIb, it prepares you to teach Reiki to others.

What’s in each Reiki Manual?

A good Reiki manual used to learn Reiki should be properly structured and include specific subjects for the Reiki students:

  1. Reiki Level 1
    • Reiki history, starting with Dr Mikao Usui or before.
    • Fundamentals about the Reiki energy.
    • The five Reiki principles or precepts.
    • Hand positions for self healing.
  2. Reiki Level 2
    • First three Reiki symbols
    • Distant Reiki techniques.
    • Reiki on others.
  3. Reiki Level 3 (Master)
    • The fourth Reiki Master symbol.
    • How to give attunements to others.
    • How to teach Reiki.

10 Things to Remember

  1. Never buy a manual before, if you consider taking a class on Reiki. All Reiki training classes recommend and use their own manuals, and many of them include them for free once you decide to take the class.
  2. Check what Reiki branch the manual’s author belongs to. Each manual is highly influenced by and reflects author’s beliefs – or lack of beliefs – in mystical things and religion. Look for a branch with beliefs similar with yours.
  3. Make sure your manual is long enough and includes most if not all information mentioned before. For instance, there are manuals not talking abut the symbols, and symbols may be important to you. To properly learn Reiki, you need to know about the Reiki symbols.
  4. Free or very cheap manuals are very tempting and affordable, but quality often comes with a price. Best manuals are not usually free, but they may be written in a better way and you gain more insights after all.
  5. Many people separately buy a paperback manual long after they got initiated to Reiki. This is because a Reiki book in the right format may become in time your second handy bible.
  6. Look for the right amount of information in a manual. Some of them may be too verbose, repeating and metaphorical for your taste. Others may be too short and not go deep into the subject. One hundred paperback pages per level would be around the right amount.
  7. You’ll learn more from a manual written by a reputable and recognized Reiki Master & Teacher than from a relatively new Reiki student. Remember anyone may write Reiki manuals, and the information from some of them could be misleading.
  8. No matter what’s the Reiki branch you end up attracted to with, it’s always worth to study the history of Reiki and understand its original Usui Reiki concepts. Look for an updated manual, because there are new historic findings every few years.
  9. Read more then one manual – each written from a different branch or perspective – to understand not just the cultural differences between the Reiki forms, but also how this perspective changed in time.
  10. Do not rely on just the large number of good Amazon reviews to decide buy a manual. Be aware not all reviews are genuine, even when they come with a “Verified Purchase” label. Try to skip short “great book” reviews and look for deep critical reviews, with essence.

Most of the books I recommend here I bought for myself, with the same format and affordable price. I wouldn’t recommend them otherwise.

  2. Or you may install a free Kindle app on your iPad, Kindle Fire tablet, or smartphone. Log in with your Amazon account, and all digital Kindle books you purchased will appear there.
  3. Or you may opt for a Kindle reader, in which case you should be more familiar on how to download e-books to your device.

Essential ReikiEssential Reiki: A Complete Guide to an Ancient Healing Art is a former best-seller and one of the best manuals written by a Master. William Rand is also a well-known personality in the Reiki world: he studied many forms of Reiki, he is the head of ICRT and he also created new Reiki branches, such as Karuna Reiki. In author’s words: “this book is the spiral edition of the manual”.

Last edition was published in 2000, and may look a bit old today. However, it’s still highly recommended by a whooping 89% of all Amazon reviewers. There is no Kindle edition, but you can still buy it in a different book format from Amazon.

This revised and expanded edition includes important new information on the theory and practice of Reiki, including the Japanese Reiki techniques taught by Dr. Usui as well as the Hayashi healing guide. A good manual to learn Reiki with. Also included are pictures of the Usui Memorial in Tokyo, and of Mt. Kurama where Reiki was rediscovered.

Essential Reiki Teaching ManualEssential Reiki Teaching Manual: A Companion Guide for Reiki Healers teaches 3rd (ART) and 4th degree Reiki, both for the Master level.

Learn Reiki from this 2003 edition (164 pages in paperback format), which is a complete instruction guide for giving attunements, including Reiki I, Reiki II, Reiki III/Advanced Reiki Training, and Reiki Master. The book also has the Reiki I, II , III, & Master symbols, including new Tibetan symbols that facilitate the attunement and remove spiritual blocks.

These texts are also available through the International Center for Reiki Training (ICRT) or from may teachers who provide this manual to their students.

2 Reiki Manuals by Penelope Quest

Reiki for LifeReiki for Life: The Complete Guide to Reiki Practice for Levels 1, 2 & 3 is a 2016 updated illustrated edition of a three-in-one manual. The 310 page soft cover book, suitable for both Reiki beginners and masters, has been revised with the latest findings and Reiki techniques. The book has a good rating of 4.6 out of 5 stars on Amazon. I bought this e-book from Amazon, in Kindle format, for a reasonable price.

It explains basic Reiki routines, it has details about the power and potential of each level, and it shows special techniques for enhancing the Reiki practice.

  1. First part explains the Reiki energy.
  2. Part two focuses on activating your healing channel (that’s first degree Reiki).
  3. Part three deals with developing your understanding (that’s second degree Reiki).
  4. Part four is about the Reiki Japanese tradition.
  5. Part five deals with the Master level, and lists other forms of Reiki.

Reiki Manual Penelope QuestThe Reiki Manual: A Training Guide for Reiki Students, Practitioners, and Masters is a 2011 edition, by Penelope Quest and Kathy Roberts, with 350 pages in paperback format. The book has positive 4.5 out of 5 stars reviews, with 73% at maximum rating. The Kindle format on Amazon has a reasonable price.

Learn Reiki from the manual, which covers Reiki levels 1, 2, and 3. The information is accessible, structured, and interactive.

The book is somewhat redundant and completely leaves out the Reiki symbols! If you’ve read Reiki for Life by the same author, you can probably skip this book, as it lays out the information in a different format, for the most part. Both books are manuals – don’t get confused by the misleading title of the previous book! – but Reiki for Life is a more recent 2016 updated edition.

1 Reiki Manual by Lisa Powers

Reiki Lisa PowersReiki: Level I, II and Master Manual is a three-in-one complete Reiki manual, last updated in 2016. You get this manual for free, as part of the package, in PDF format, if you take Lisa’s very affordable course on Udemy, as I did. If you are able to book the course at just US $10 or so, you’ll get not just this manual, but plenty of other resources for free. And this makes the course one of the best deals you may find for your Reiki training. Or you can buy the reasonably priced book from Amazon.

  1. First 90 pages are dedicated to Reiki Level 1. You’ll earn the basics of Reiki, some history, the essence of energy healing and some recommended hand positions for self-healing.
  2. Reiki Level 2 takes the next 80 pages. You’ll walk through the first three symbols and you’ll learn new Reiki techniques, including the distant Reiki.
  3. Last 70 pages prepare you to become a Reiki Master. This last part is rather short, compared with other manuals, but well written and to the point. Learning Reiki is easy.

3 Reiki Manuals by Taggart King

Shoden Taggart KingReiki First Degree Manual (Shoden) is a copy of the actual Reiki Level 1 training manual given to First Degree students of Reiki Evolution, a UK organization founded by Taggart King. According to its author, the manual is easy-to-read, down-to-earth and really comprehensive. It has 174 pages in paperback format, and it was published in 2005. Buy the Kindle edition from Amazon for less than US $10.

The manuals contain up to date info about Reiki’s history, as well as original techniques and approaches that Usui Sensei passed on to a group of his students still alive. Many of these techniques and approaches are not yet well known within the world of Reiki, and they are explained fully in the course manuals. Such as hatsurei ho, Usui Sensei’s self-treatment meditation, the use of mindfulness, the original form of the Reiki precepts, intuitive working, oneness, a simple way of working with the energies that the Reiki symbols represent, the use of kotodama, Reiju empowerments, defining the hara, and self-empowerment methods.

Okuden Taggart KingReiki Second Degree Manual (Okuden) is a copy of the actual Reiki Level 2 training manual given to Second Degree students of Reiki Evolution, a UK organization founded by Taggart King. It was published in 2017 in Amazon Kindle digital format. Buy this cheap Kindle edition from Amazon for less than US $10.

Rather than presenting the Western style of Reiki covered in most Reiki books, the manual emphasises the form of Reiki that was taught by Reiki s founder, Mikao Usui, and is based on information coming from a group of elderly students of Reiki’s founder.

Shinpiden Taggart KingReiki Master Manual (Shinpiden) is a copy of the actual Reiki Level 3 training manual given to Master Degree students of Reiki Evolution, a UK organization founded by Taggart King. It has 204 pages in paperback format, and it was published in 2005. Like the other two previous manuals, the Kindle edition of this last book in the series costs less than US $10 on Amazon.

This is a major work, dealing with both Western and original Japanese approaches to energy work at Reiki Master Teacher level. While many Reiki Master courses just deal with ‘how to attune people’, this is just a small part of the RMT course with Reiki Evolution. Using text, summaries, illustrations and images, the manual details everything you need to know to practise confidently as a Reiki Master Teacher.

1 Reiki Manual by Nathaniel

Reiki NathanielLearn Reiki: First Degree – Shoden is another manual for Reiki Level 1, with 118 pages in paperback format, published in 2013. The Kindle edition is below US $1, so I just paid for it and I thought it worth mentioning here.

The author lives in Poland, where he works as a Reiki practioner and teacher. He is a Reiki teacher from two lineages and an author of multiple books on Reiki.

The book got mixed reviews. One legitimate remark is the word “negative”, especially associated with the Reiki energy, is used way too often, and readers may get a wrong impression. The writing has also some awkward expressions and may be definitely improved.

3 Reiki Manuals by Djamel Boucly

Reiki 1 DjamelReiki: A Complete Guide To The Holistic Healing Modality Usui Reiki – Level 1 has 100 pages (in paperback edition) and 4.4 out of 5 stars positive reviews. The Amazon Kindle edition is below US $3.

That’s a good book for beginners, as it lays out the foundation of Reiki. However, it has been quickly edited, especially for the Kindle format, and you may find some typos and misspelling errors.

You will be guided through an introduction to Reiki and Reiki 1 lessons they teach in their Reiki Level 1 Workshops and Reiki Level 1 Video Home Study Courses.

Reiki 2 DjamelReiki: A Complete Guide To The Holistic Healing Modality Usui Reiki – Level 2 is the second manual in the series, with 116 pages in paperback edition. The Amazon Kindle edition is also below US $3.

The book has details about the Reiki symbols, healing techniques, smoothing the aura, beaming, distant healing and other Reiki level 2 subjects.

As for the first volume, the whole set is a cheap way to quickly acquire some Reiki manuals. They are not expensive, but this is also reflected somehow in the way the information is presented and edited.

Reiki 3 DjamelReiki: A Complete Guide To The Holistic Healing Modality Usui Reiki – Level 3 is the third and last volume in the series, for the Reiki Master level. The book has 132 pages in paperback edition, and is below US $3 in Amazon Kindle format. All three manuals together cost less than US $10 in digital Kindle edition!

Learn Reiki from this book, that gives you the definitions of Tibetan Buddhist Symbols. It also talks about the healing and distant attunements, shows you advanced Reiki techniques, and introduces you to Reiju. You learn about additional advanced techniques required to become a Master.

Chris

I’m a Reiki Practitioner, soon to be a Reiki Master. I’m a pre-diabetic and I have hypothyroid problems. Standard western medicine has not been able to date to find a proper answer to my problems. So I turned my head to alternative methods and I found joy and relief by doing so.
