We aim for the most complete, recent and constantly updated study of the individual and total average price of all Reiki classes and Reiki training required to achieve the final Reiki Master & Teacher status.

We look in detail at Reiki training classes in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Australia.

1. What Are the Reiki Training Classes?

1.1. Reiki Training Levels

There are three standard Reiki levels, which are usually reflected in both manuals and training classes. The large majority of both Reiki manuals and Reiki classes are structured and divided in these three separate levels:

  1. Reiki Level 1 (Shoden, or 1st degree Reiki) gets the Reiki student familiar with Reiki’s origins and its history, dating back to Dr Misao Usui. You learn fundamentals about the Reiki energy and practice the five Reiki principles before getting your first attunements from your Reiki Master/Teacher.
  2. Reiki Level 2 (Okuden, or 2nd degree Reiki) continues with three Reiki symbols, distant Reiki techniques and Reiki practice on others. You basically become a Reiki Practitioner after this course.
  3. Reiki Level 3 (Shinpiden, or Master) may be split up eventually into two stages:
    • Advanced Reiki Techniques (ART, or 3rd degree Reiki, or IIIa) initiates you in the fourth Reiki Master symbol and shows you how to give attunements to others. You become a Reiki Master after this stage, but you cannot (yet) teach Reiki to others.
    • Master Teacher (or 4th degree Reiki, or IIIb) is the final last stage in your Reiki training, after which you may teach Reiki to other students. You become a Reiki Master & Teacher at the end of this journey.

2.2. Reiki Training Titles

  • Reiki Student = someone who learns about Reiki, by himself or going to one or more Reiki classes, taught by a Reiki Master/Teacher, to follow the curriculum presented before.
  • Reiki Patient/Receiver = someone who receives Reiki from a Reiki Practitioner (see below), in a Reiki session..
  1. Reiki Practitioner  (RP) = someone who completed Reiki Level 1 and 2, and is allowed to practice Reiki on others. Remark that some teachers may also offer a separate Reiki Practitioner course, which combines Reiki Level 1 and 2 together and focuses on people who just want to open a business practice and heal Reiki Patients with their Reiki energy.
  2. Reiki Master  (RM) = a Reiki Practitioner who also completed the 3rd degree Reiki, with at least the ART (Advanced Reiki Techniques) stage. Reiki Masters know how to give attunements to Reiki Students, but they cannot teach them Reiki (yet).
  3. Reiki Master/Teacher (RMT, i.e. Master AND Teacher) = a Reiki Master who completed the 4th degree Reiki as well, and can now teach Reiki Students. This is the last and highest qualification in the traditional Usui Reiki.
  4. Licensed Reiki Master/Teacher (LRMT) = a Reiki Master/Teacher who becomes member of a validating Reiki association, with high ethics standards and credibility. There are usually more requirements for this title, such as several years of practice by healing or teaching people, specific courses and exams, periodic verification.

2. How Much Does a Reiki Class Cost?

Let’s start with a scare. Hawayo Takata, the one responsible for bringing Reiki to the West, used to charge US $10,000 to train a student for the Master level alone.

Her successor, Phyllis Furumoto (which is also her granddaughter) started The Reiki Alliance after her death, which continues today with the exact same very expensive tradition:

Reiki Master for 10,000

The Reiki Alliance still asks $10,000 for a Master today!

We further analyzed the total average of the Reiki training class cost in some major English-speaking countries: the United States and United Kingdom, Canada and Australia.

2.1. How Much is a Reiki Class in the U.S.?

We looked at Reiki teachers from different places in the United States, and found their total Reiki teaching rates usually varying between US $350 and US $1,200.

Big cities like New York or San Francisco – with higher cost of living, but higher salaries as well – charge the highest rates.

As for the Reiki sessions, Florida has some interesting low prices for its Reiki training classes.

To get a better picture, here are seven US locations with their specific individual and total prices, and the numbers of days or hours per course, in a table and on a map:

Did You KnowWilliam Lee Rand, founder of the ICRT (International Center for Reiki Training) is credited with breaking up with the expensive “tradition” of charging US $10,000 for the Master level. He challenged The Reiki Alliance and started with just US $600 for a similar training.

Today, his courses are slightly more expensive than those from local workshops, but his classes are limited and usually sold-out.

2.2. How Much is a Reiki Class in the U.K.?

In a similar way, we looked at Reiki teachers from United Kingdom cities, and found their total Reiki training prices usually vary between £500 and £1,500.

As expected, the London metropolitan area is the most expensive.

Looking at Reiki teachers from different large Canadian cities, we found the total Reiki training price usually varying between CAD $500 and CAD $1,400.

Toronto and Montreal don’t always have the highest Reiki training prices, as you might expect. Taxes (the HST/GST) are not usually included in the advertised prices.

I’m a Reiki Practitioner, soon to be a Reiki Master. I’m a pre-diabetic and I have hypothyroid problems. Standard western medicine has not been able to date to find a proper answer to my problems. So I turned my head to alternative methods and I found joy and relief by doing so.
