There could be thousands of Reiki types or branches today, but only two dozens or so are truly relevant. Most books and online posts stop after 20-25 of them. We decided to document the most, and put a face on them – when available – with photos of their founders.

Almost all Reiki types derive from the energy healing method rediscovered by Mikao Usui one hundred years ago, in Japan. Knowing the history and branches of Reiki helps you determine which Reiki systems are best for you.

What is a Reiki Branch?

A Reiki type or branch is the specific way to teach Reiki by a master, or in a specific school, organization or separated Reiki movement. When someone adds new elements to the previous ways Reiki was introduced and presented to the masses, he basically creates a new Reiki branch.

Don’t get confused when you hear other synonyms of a Reiki branch – such as Reiki type, Reiki form, Reiki styleReiki school or Reiki system – they all mean more or less the same thing.

Classification of Reiki Types

  1. Japanese Reiki Types – Reiki taught by a Japanese, in Japan, usually in the pure ancient tradition of the Mikao Usui’s Reiki. But Japanese Reiki today has a strong Western infusion. Japanese Reiki schools or types may be also taught by Westerners (like Chris Marsh, Dave King and Frans or Bronwen Stiene), in a pure Japanese-style.
  2. Western Reiki Types – derived from Hawayo Takata‘s Reiki, usually taught by a Westerner, but also by contemporary Japanese masters (like Hiroshi Doi).
  3. Tibetan Reiki Types – traditional Usui Reiki has been “enhanced” at some point with strong Tibetan elements (new symbols, dragons etc). One main ramification started with Arthur Robertson‘s Raku Kei Reiki.
  4. Eastern Reiki Types – specific Reiki types from contemporary India, with Hindu deities and lots of Tibet/Yoga-specific elements (like intensive chakra and aura healing).
  5. Seichim Reiki Types – Reiki (as element earth) enhanced with Seichim elements (air, water, fire) and concepts.
  6. Traditional/Non-Traditional Reiki Types – in the spirit of the original Reiki introduced by Mikao Usui. Non-traditional Reiki system include forms altered with Tibetan influences, New Age crystals, angels, dragons or other elements, “channeled” from other supernatural beings, or from some independent teachers. Many non-traditional Reiki system may also rise a question of legitimacy: not necessarily a fraud or scam, they may look dubious. Anybody may have just a regular vision in their sleep, and come up with new symbols. Or simply create a new Reiki school or type “specialized” in no matter what.

Reiki Trademarks

Many Reiki founders protected their product with a trademark. Trademarks registered with the USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office) have a ® following term’s name. Unregistered trademarks appear with a ™ suffix and their owners still have some legal rights over the protected term within the geographic areas in which they operate.

Here are registered and unregistered Reiki trademarks used in this article:

  • Reiki, Usui System, Usui Shiki Ryoho – attempts to trademark these tree terms have been made in 1997 by Phyllis Lei Furumoto, but failed.
  • Authentic Reiki®, Real Reiki®, Radiance Technique® – verified registered service marks of Barbara Ray, from the Radiance Technique International Association.
  • Karuna Reiki® – verified registered trademark of William Lee Rand from ICRT, since 1995.
  • Tera Mai® – verified registered trademark of Kathleen Ann Milner, since 1995, for both Tera Mai and Tera Mai Seichem. She shares it openly and freely with all properly attuned Tera Mai initiates. Old online page versions may still refer to Tera-Mai™, but the registered nominations should be used instead.
  • Vajra Reiki™ – unregistered trademark.
  • Angelic Reiki – verified abandoned registered trademark of Christine Core, after inter-parties decision. On her website it’s said she has a registered trademark, but it appears it is not true.
  • Reiki TUMMO™ – verified and it appears as an abandoned registered trademark of Irmansyah Effend. So we’ll still use it, but as an unregistered trademark.
  • Men Chho Reiki™ – unregistered trademark (presumed registration not found).
  • Reiki Jin Kei Do® – (not verified) registered trademark.
  • Reiki Plus® – (not verified) registered trademark.
  • Helen Belot Sekhem – this does not appear as a registered trademark. The story is Helen Belot tried to registered the term “Sekhem” alone, and it failed in US, but it was accepted in the UE, due to the lack of opposition. Patrick Zeigler says he suggested Helen to register “Helen Belot Sekhem”, but she refused.

List of Reiki Types

1. Usui Reiki

Mikao UsuiPracticed by Mikao Usui (1865 – 1926), in 1922, Japan.

The short history is that, during the early 1920s, Mikao Usui – a Buddhist monk – did a 21-day practice on Mount Kurama-yama, and during these three weeks of prayer and fasting he developed or “rediscovered” Reiki.

This is the first modern form of Reiki, the Reiki type rediscovered and practiced by Dr. Mikao Usui. Most current Japanese and Western branches today have the Usui Reiki as root and main reference.

In fact, the term of Reiki itself – as a healing system – frequently refers to this traditional form of Usui Reiki. Reiki means both the healing system (used frequently with a capital R) and its universal energy (written as reiki).

What is specific to this Reiki system
  • Using reiju empowerments rather than symbols (as we know today, symbols were used first time by Mikao Usui just to help some late students remember how to get into a specific state of mind).
  • The term reiki was used in affirmations, but not as a name for the system. Instead, students called the teachings Usui Teate (Usui Hand Touch/Healing), or Usui Do (Usui Way).
  • Reiki Principles/Precepts created by Mikao Usui.
  • Hands-on healings for the self and others. Focused more on self-development.
  • Techniques, four mantras and symbols, reiju1.

Usui taught Reiki to over two thousand people during his lifetime, sixteen of which continued their training to reach the Shinpiden (Master) level.

I’ve never been given this method by anybody nor studied to get psychic power to heal. I accidentally realized that I have received healing power when I felt the air in mysterious way during fasting. So I have a hard time explaining exactly even I am the founder.

2. Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai

Kanichi Taketomi - Reiki TypesJuzaburo UshidaFounded by either Mikao Usui himself, in 1922, or one of his students, shortly after his death (in 1926).

Presidents over the years (after Mikao Usui, considered the first president): Juzaburo Ushida (1865 – 1935), Kanichi Taketomi (1878 – 1960), Yoshiharu Watanabe ( – 1960) – all three former students of Mikao Usui. Followed by Hoichi Wanami (1883 – 1975), Kimiko Koyama (1906 – 1999), Masataki Kondoh (student of Wanami), Ichita Takahashi2. Hiroshi Doi (see below) claims he’s been a member of the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai until 2010.

This was and remains a pure Japanese Reiki school.

Original members were officers in the Japanese Navy and Reiki was just for them and their personnel. They tried to preserve Mikao Usui’s original teachings, but their own shihan (teachers) introduced or took away material over the years.

What is specific to this Reiki organization
  • Internally seen rather as a (secret) society, not a Reiki branch.
  • They teach three major levels with sub-levels.
  • Techniques: hatsurei ho, byosen reikan ho, reiji ho.
  • Reiju performed at each meeting, by a shihan (teacher).
  • Meetings three times a month, in Tokyo.
  • Membership only by invitation and no foreigners accepted.
  • Very restrictive with the methods they use and the info they give out.
  • We still know very little about them.

3. Hayashi Reiki Ryoho Kenkyu-Kai

Chujiro HayashiFounded by Chujiro Hayashi (1879 – 1940, student of Mikao Usui), in 1931.

Hayashi was a retired surgeon from the Japanese Navy, and then a member of the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai. He was the teacher of Hawayo Takata, who later brought Reiki to the West.

Japanese Reiki type.

What is specific to this Reiki system
  • Focused on hands-on healing treatments.
  • Seen more as an external practice than Usui Reiki (“Hayashi Reiki”).
  • Hayashi was giving Reiki treatments to clients in the mornings.
  • Reiki Ryoho was taught for five days each month.
  • Shoden level training was for 1h30 a day over the five day period.

4. Tomita Teate Ryoho-Kai

Kaiji Tomita - Reiki TypesFounded by Kaiji Tomita (student of Mikao Usui), after the death of his master.

He became a famous healer and author in Japan. His book was called Reiki To Jinjutsu – Tomita Ryu Teate Ryoho (Reiki and Humanitarian Work – Tomita Ryu Hand Healing). Tomita Teate Ryoho-kai translates into Tomita Hand Healing Associaltion.

What is specific to this Reiki system
  • Four levels: Shoden, Chuuden, Okuden, Kaiden.
  • Each of the first 3 levels required 5 days, Kaiden 15 days.

5. Tenohira Ryoji Kenkyu-Kai

Toshiro EguchiFounded by Toshihiro Eguchi (1873 – 1946), in 1928.

As friend and student of Mikao Usui, Eguchi spent several months working and studying with him in 1920-1921. He returned two years later to Usui’s training centre, to practice and teach his own system, about twice a week.

Japanese Reiki type.

Te-no-hira means palm of the hand in Japanese. Tenohira Ryoji Kenkyu-Kai translates into Palm Healing Research Association.

Eguchi decided to establish his own Reiki school or hand healing research center after Mikao Usui grew uncomfortable with his religious approach. He was allowed to perform his own blessing ceremony, but not allowed to chant the prayer element.

What is specific to this Reiki system
  • Elements of Usui Reiki with religious overtones.
  • Waka poetry, diet, hygiene and psychological aspects.
  • Meditation and chanted prayer – known as Komyo Kigan.
  • Blessing ceremony.

Eguchi had learned the blessing ceremony from Tenko Nishida, a friend who later founded the Ittoen community. He taught his system of healing to the members of Tenko Nishida’s Ittoen community in 1929. Among his famous students are Yasukiyo Eguchi, Kohshi Mitsui, and Goro Miyazaki.

Toshihiro Eguchi later published two books:

  • Te-no-hira Ryoji Nyumon (An Introduction to Healing with the Palms), in 1930.
  • Te-no-hira Ryoji Wo Kataru (A Tale of Healing with the Palms of the Hands) in 1954.

6. Usui-Do (or Usui-Do Eidan)

Dave KingFounded by Dave King (lineage Mikao Usui – Toshishiro Eguchi – Yuji Onuki) and Melissa Riggall.

Dave King said this was a close reconstruction of Usui’s system as presented by Yuji Onuki, a student of Toshihiro Eguchi, who gave training to Dao Shen-Lissa, Tan-Lin (George) Mullen and Dave King in Morocco in 19713.

Japanese-style branch or Reiki school, practiced by a Westerner in the Japanese-style tradition.

What is specific to this Reiki system
  • 13 levels: from rokyu to shichidan. There are no “masters”.
  • A holder of level 5 godan may use the title shihan and present the system up to nidan.
  • System of self development (not about healing others, teaching or “becoming a master”).
  • Presented in a ‘dojo’ format, in the spirit of most Japanese spiritual and martial arts.

7. Jikiden Reiki Type

Tadao Yamaguchi - Jikiden Reiki TypeChiyoko Yamaguchi - Jikiden Reiki TypeFounded by Chiyoko Yamaguchi (lineage Mikao Usui – Chujiro Hayashi) and Tadao Yamaguchi (her son and student).

Chiyoko Yamaguchi (1921 – 2003) was taught Reiki by Hayashi in the late 1930s, when she was 17 years old. She practiced it daily for 65 years until she passed away in 2003. Tadao Yamaguchi (1952 – , founder of Jikiden Reiki Institute) has been using it for 50 years, and still does.

Japanese Reiki branch, with modern contemporary Western influences.

Mrs. Yamaguchi was given a qualification as a teacher by Chujiro Hayashi, and was given permission to conduct Reiju. In 1942, she moved to Manchuria, and Hayashi’s wife encouraged her to propagate Reiki there. However, she come back to Japan because she could not stay there after Japan lost the war4.

What is specific to this Reiki system
  • Four levels. Teachers are called Shihan.
  • Shihankaku (assistant teacher) level – over 6..12 months.
  • Regular Shoden/Okuden courses – over five days, with five attunements.
  • Three slightly different mantras and symbols.
  • Techniques: distant Reiki, nentatsu ho, ketsueki kokan ho.

The large majority (99%) of Reiki currently being practiced in Japan is Western style Reiki even though Reiki comes originally from Japan. One point, it was believed that Western style Reiki was the only surviving Reiki and that there were no longer any practitioners in Japan, so when Reiki was reintroduced to Japan, those people who were interested visited North America to learn it. In truth, there have always been Reiki successors here in Japan.

Tadao Yamaguchi – About Jikiden Reiki

8. Komyo Reiki Kai

Hyakuten InamotoFounded by Hyakuten Inamoto (lineage Mikao Usui – Chujiro Hayashi – Chiyoko Yamaguchi), a Pure Land Buddhist monk.

Japanese Reiki type.

Inamoto created a manual for his own students, and modified elements of Mrs Yamaguchi’s teachings with his own personal understanding of Reiki. He also incorporated various Buddhist concepts, terms and practices, as well as some elements probably drawn from Hiroshi Doi’s Gendai Reiki teachings.

What is specific to this Reiki school
  • Emphasis on personal spiritual transformation or Satori.
  • Emphasis on the philosophical aspects of Reiki.
  • Four levels Reiki: Shoden, Chuden, Okuden and Shinpiden.
  • First two levels focused on therapy, last two more spiritual.

  • Hatsurei ho central element – as the Buddhist’s breathing practice.

9. Usui-Teate (or Method to Achieve Personal Perfection)

Chris MarshFounded by Chris Marsh (lineage Mikao Usui – Suzuki san). The term reiki was originally used just in affirmations, but not as a name for the system: students called Mikao Usui’s teachings Usui Teate (Usui Hand Touch/Healing), or Usui Do (Usui Way)

Very specific Japanese-style branch. Practiced in Japan, in Japanese tradition, by a Westerner. More to this, Chris Marsh does not want its system to be called or associated to Reiki, when in fact what he teaches is clearly a form of Reiki.

What is specific to this Reiki system
  • Teaching is tailored to the individual, each experience being different.
  • After the initial introduction the real work of study begins with approved experienced teacher.
  • Small number of ‘Teaching Students’ these are Senior students who can undertake some basic teaching and support of students, with the close supervision of a full teacher. They may teach only with the approval of the Full Teachers5.

It isn’t Reiki. It’s older than Reiki. It has a purity and simplicity that Western Reiki doesn’t have. It isn’t about a three day course and being a master. It’s about learning to master yourself over a number of years. That’s where I am.

Chris Marsh – An Interview With Chris Marsh

10. Gendai Reiki Ho

Hiroshi DoiFounded by Hiroshi Doi (lineage Mikao Usui – Juzaburo Ushida – Kanichi Taketomi – Yoshiharu Watanabe – Toyoichi Wanami – Kimiko Koyama, and many others…).

Hiroshi Doi was a member of the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai until 2010, after which he founded his own school (Gendai Reiki Healing Kyokai) and developed his own healing method: Gendai Reiki Ho (Modern Reiki Method).

Japanese Reiki branch (as practiced in Japan and because of its Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai link), but with very strong Western and Tibetan influences.

Hiroshi Doi studied many forms of Reiki, including the traditional Usui Reiki from Kimiko Koyama (former Gakkai chairperson), and The Radiance Technique from Mieko Mitsui (a former student of Barbara Weber-Ray). Other teachers: Hiroshi Ohta, Manaso and Chiyoko Yamaguchi.

What is specific to this Reiki type
  • Strong Buddhist perspective to the original reiki teachings.

  • About two thirds of all practices are from other therapeutic modalities, such as New Age.
  • Simplified and standardized techniques.
  • Four levels of Reiki: Shoden (for Beginners), Okuden (Inner Teaching) Shinpiden (Mastery Teaching) and Gokui Kaiden.
  • One integrated attunement developed by Hirashi Doi on the last level.
  • Reiju performed at each level.
  • Four traditional mantras/symbols.

11. Usui Shiki Ryoho

Hawayo TakataFounded by Hawayo Takata (1900 – 1980, lineage Mikao Usui – Chujiro Hayashi).

Mrs. Takata trained 22 students up to the Master level: Paul Mitchell, Beth Gray, Ursula Baylow, Barbara McCullough, George Araki, Iris Ishikuro, Fran Brown, Barbara Weber-Ray, Ethel Lombardi, Wanja Twan, Virgina Samdahl, Phyllis Lei Furumoto (her granddaughter), Dorothy Baba, Mary McFadyen, John Gray, Barbara Brown, Shinobo Saito, Harry Kuboi, Patricia Bowlig Ewing, Bethel phaigh, Rick Brockner, and Ray Yamashita.

Root of basically any Western Reiki branch. Hawayo Takata is the sole main responsible for bringing Reiki to the west. Without her it’s possible we would not talk today about a “Western Reiki Branch“.

Following her death, most of her 22 students developed their own flavor of Reiki.

What is specific to this Reiki system
  • Traditional Usui/Hayashi Reiki with personal improvisations.
  • “Simplified” Reiki for the non-Japanese mind.
  • Little Japanese philosophy/culture elements.
  • Taught in three levels: Reiki I, Reiki II and Reiki III/Master.
  • $10,000 price tag for level III/Master.
  • Variable style and duration of the classes.
  • Passed mostly in oral tradition (Dr. Usui used notes in his classes).
  • Reiki symbols used in a different non-traditional way.

Usui Shiki Ryoho means The Usui System of Reiki Healing. After Takata’s death, Phyllis Lei Furumoto (her daughter) and Barbara Weber-Ray continued to lead Usui Shiki Ryoho for a while, but then split up: Phyllis Lei Furumoto founded The Reiki Alliance, while Barbara Weber-Ray founded The Radiance Technique, and other students created their own form of Reiki. Beth Gray did not join with other former students of Takata and went on to teach this system throughout US and Australia.

As a form of teaching Reiki, Usui Shiki Ryoho continues to be followed today by her daughter, Phyllis Lei Furumoto, at The Reiki Alliance. Who also kept in place the high US $10,000 fee required for Master level training.

I believe there exists One Supreme Being – the Absolute Infinite – a Dynamic Force that governs the world and universe. It is an unseen spiritual power that vibrates and all other powers fade into insignificance beside it. So, therefore, it is Absolute! I shall call it “Reiki”. Being a universal force from the Great Divine Spirit, it belongs to all who seek and desire to learn the art of healing.

Hawayo Takata

12. The Reiki Alliance

Phyllis Lei FurumotoFounded by Phyllis Lei Furumoto (lineage Mikao Usui – Chujiro Hayashi – Hawayo Takata), in 1983.

Following the split-up between Phyllis Lei Furumoto and Barbara Weber-Ray at the leadership of Usui Shiki Ryoho, the legacy of Hawayo Takata, Phyllis Lei Furumoto (the granddaughter of Mrs. Takata) founded the Reiki Alliance (and became “grandmaster“!), while Barbara Weber-Ray went on to create her own branch with The Radiance Technique.

Western Reiki branch.

In 1982, in Hawaii, masters initiated by Hawayo Takata and Phyllis Furumoto acknowledged Phyllis Lei Furumoto as Hawayo Takata’s successor, the lineage bearer. In 1983, in British Columbia, they founded The Reiki Alliance, which is today a well-known large Reiki organization, continuing the tradition of Takata’s legacy, Usui Shiki Ryoho.

What is specific to this Reiki organization
  • Three levels of Reiki.
  • Four attunements in Level I, one or two in Level II, one in Level III.
  • Four traditional mantras and symbols: three for Level II, one for III,
  • Strong Code of Ethics and standards to ensure Reiki practitioners follow the traditional Usui Reiki teachings.
  • Membership to help Reiki practitioners enjoy better credibility in their field of practice.

Most Reiki practitioners today are not members of this association. This may have to do with the high US $10,000 fee required for Master level training, as originated by Hawayo Takata.

13. The Radiance Technique® (or Authentic Reiki®)

Barbara Weber Ray - Reiki TypesFounded by Barbara Weber Ray (lineage Mikao Usui – Chujiro Hayashi – Hawayo Takata), in 1983. Process described in her book The Reiki Factor.

After Takata’s death, in 1980, Barbara Ray claimed she’s been the only student of hers (in 1997) who received the true teachings, which include a Tibetan history and New Age elements. The Radiance Technique marks the major split-up within Usui Shiki Ryoko, the other important branch being The Reiki Alliance of Phyllis Furumoto.

Western Reiki type.

What is specific to this Reiki system
  • Three levels initially, extended later to seven.
  • Non-traditional attunements: four in level 1, one in level 2.
  • Students can teach the levels beneath, starting with level 3.
  • Deprogramming technique.
  • Different names for the traditional symbols: Cosmic Pattern 1/4/22.
  • Traditional mantras replacing the symbols at level 2.

14. Mariel (or Mari-El)

Ethel LombardiFounded by Ethel Lombardi (lineage Mikao Usui – Chujiro Hayashi – Hawayo Takata), in 1983.

This was the first western branch after Takata’s, and the split-up between Furumoto and Barbara Ray. Mari comes from Mary (Mother of Christ), and El is another name for God.

Western Reiki branch.

This healing system is no longer being taught by Ethel. She only taught one person how to teach the system and Mari-El is no longer being taught. An advanced student in Mari-El developed yet another system called Radiant Heart Therapy.

What is specific to this Reiki system
  • Every cell in our body has a memory.
  • Memories of a negative experience will block the flow of energy.
  • Mari-EL healing helps to release these blocking memories.
  • One level, with additional classes for advanced techniques.
  • One attunement (similar to Usui Reiki’s) given during the first level.
  • Three not secret symbols, somehow different than Usui Reiki’s.
  • Hand positions, and a distance treatment.
  • Energy lines to be traced on the bodies before a treatment.

15. Raku Kei Reiki

Arthur Robertson - Reiki TypesFounded by Arthur Robertson (lineage Mikao Usui – Chujiro Hayashi – Hawayo Takata – Iris Ishikuro), in 1983, after he studied with another Takata student, Virginia Samdahl, in 1975.

Ishikuro (a friend and student of Takata, and member of the Johrei Felowship) has been asked by her teacher to teach just three teacher students – and she trained just two at the end. Arthur Robertson was one of them, and he made many changes to the Reiki system (like chakras and techniques unrelated to the Japanese culture), which influenced most New Age branches from the 80s.

Western Tibetan Reiki branch.

It is said that when Mikao Usui’s students wrote manuals, they left out some things they didn’t think important. When the historic information was gathered again, some other Masters integrated it in their own form of Reiki. Raku Kei is one of these more complete forms of original Usui Reiki.

This was the first branch to break away from Takata’s teachings and introduce the myth of the Tibetan history in Reiki. It is said Raku Kei Reiki originated from the Lama Community in ancient Tibet, and was lost for many centuries.

What is specific to this Reiki type
  • Shamanic techniques using sacre elements: Fire, Earth, Air, Water and Ether.
  • Elements can be used for energy generation.
  • Sacred elements are building blockages of our manifest world.
  • The sacred energy connects a person to the forces of 5th dimension.
  • Raku is the vertical energy flow within the body.
  • Kei energy flows in horizontal form.
  • Advanced Reiki: requires previous training in another Reiki form.
  • Breathing patterns and techniques.
  • New symbols and master symbols. The Johrei symbol.
  • Mudras, meditation information, auric body system.
  • Chakras and balancing, Raku Kei affirmation.
  • Seven notes of musical scale for healing and development.
  • Four levels, with first two levels learned in one class.
  • Three non-traditional attunements, and one initiation.

The Raku school of practice led to the development of other Reiki branches, such as Vajra Reiki™, Karuna Reiki®, and Tera Mai® Reiki.

16. Johrei Reiki (or Jo Reiki)

Founded by Jim Davis (lineage Mikao Usui – Chujiro Hayashi – Hawayo Takata – Iris Ishikuro – Arthur Robertson).

It is believed that several Raku Kei Masters broke off and began teaching the system as Johrei Reiki. Johrei Reiki is a combination of Raku Kei Reiki and the Religion Johrei. However, the Johrei Fellowship does not recognize it, so the system stopped being taught under this name.

Western Tibetan Reiki branch.

What is specific to this Reiki system
  • The Mastership class takes you from the first degree in one weekend.
  • Three initiations.
  • Specific sequence of hand positions covering the entire body.
  • The Raku Breath (Breath of the Fire Dragon).
  • Four symbols, three as variations of the traditional symbols.
  • The Master symbol is very different from traditional Usui Reiki.

17. Vajra Reiki™

Founded by Wade Ryan, as an adaptation of Johrei Reiki.

Western Tibetan Reiki branch, influenced by Raku Key Reiki and Johrei.

What is specific to this Reiki system
  • Three levels
  • Four symbols and one Om-Ah-Hum mantra.

18. Reiki Majick

Founded by Australian A.J. Mackenzie Clay ( – 2003), who was originally taught in the Radiance Technique and also through the Reiki Alliance.

Mackenzie Clay wrote some challenging books, including The Challenge to Teach Reiki and One Step Forward for Reiki, both published in 1992.

Western Reiki branch.

Mackenzie Clay challenged the understanding of some Reiki symbols and came up with intriguing ideas concerning the Sei-He-Ki. He said a doubled and inverted Sei-He-Ki aids in the integration of the left and right brain hemispheres.

What is specific to this Reiki system
  • The four Usui symbols, plus two Kofutu symbols: Tamarasha and Zoh-va.
  • Hand positions stressing treating from the feet upwards and proper grounding techniques.

19. Wei Chi Tibetan Reiki

Kevin Ross EmeryFounded by Thomas A. Hensel and Kevin Ross Emery (photo), who claim have been channeled by Wei Chi, a Tibetan shaman who lived 5,000 years ago. He told them he and his brothers actually invented the original Reiki system, and only a small part was rediscovered by Usui in 19th century.

Tibetan Reiki branch.

What is specific to this Reiki system
  • Focused more on therapy.
  • Three practitioner levels and three master levels.
  • Practitioners channel both only energy and information.
  • Last Teacher level requires 1135 contact hours and 200 hours in practice.
  • Certificates re-issued based on the achievement of continuing education credits.
  • Symbols coming from Tibet, Egypt, Lemuria, Atlanta, South America, Peruvian Andes, Hebrew Kabbalah, etc.
  • Very ancient symbols like Shiva’s Drum, Eye of Horus, El OM, Star of David, En An Ra Hu, etc.

20. Usui/Tibetan Reiki

William Lee Rand - Reiki TypesFounded by William Lee Rand (lineage Mikao Usui – Chujiro Hayashi – Hawayo Takata – Phyllis Lei Furumoto – Carol Farmer – Leah Smith, and more…).

William Lee Rand – founder of the ICRT (International Center for Reiki Training) – developed the Usui/Tibetan Reiki system in 1989. This style of Reiki was also popularized by Diane Stein.

Western Reiki branch, in which the Usui Japanese tradition has been altered by an essential Tibetan infusion. Usui/Tibetan Reiki is a mix between Raku Rei, Usui Shiki Ryoho and traditional techniques.

It was built on the foundations of Raku Kai Reiki, created by Arthur Robertson (one of Takata’s 22 Masters and in William Rand’s lineage). Later on, William Rand expanded his areas of own Reiki types with Karuna® Reiki and Holy Fire.

What is specific to this Reiki system
  • Combines portions of Usui Reiki with a powerful Tibetan method of attunement.
  • Uses Raku crystals, guides, healing attunements and various Tibetan symbols.
  • Raku Kai Reiki uses Violet Breath, Master Frequency Generator Plates, Tibetan symbols, Hui Yin, O Sui Ching water ritual, and the White Light symbol.
  • Four levels: Level I, II, IIIa (ART) and IIIb (Master/Teacher).

When William Rand founded ICRT, he fixed the maximum price for its Reiki training classes at US $600. This created major problems for the The Reiki Alliance led by Phyllis Furumoto, that was still charging up to US $10,000 for the Master level, in the tradition established by her grandmother, Hawayo Takata.

The Reiki symbols have traditionally been kept secret. While secrecy is a way of honoring their sacredness, there are also metaphysical reasons for this. There is power in secrecy and this is also a way of maintaining a sacred connection with the symbols. Since the symbols have no real power without the attunement, it is better that they be kept secret until the class.

21. Shamballa Reiki (or Shamballa Multidimensional Healing)

John ArmitageFounded by John Armitage (also known as Hari Das Baba, or Hari Das Melchizedek), through channeled teaching related to Ascended Master St. Germain.

Western Reiki branch, with channeling and New Age concepts. It’s said to be similar to Reiki in many ways, but an independent system, best described as a spiritual practice taught as a form of energy healing.

What is specific to this Reiki type
  • Three levels.
  • 352 symbols, given to Germain while he was a high priest in Atlantis.
  • Techniques using crystals, antakharana, Reiki guides, the Ascended and Galactic Masters.

22. SKHM (or All-Love)

Patrick Zeigler - Reiki TypesFounded by Patrick Zeigler, in the 80s.

During a mystical experience in the Great Pyramid, in Egypt, Patrick felt an energy which he later found to be that of the Bodhisattva Quan Yin. Marat, an old Reishi Monk, gave later to Patrick the name Seichim. He initially called his healing system SKHM, and in 2007 he renamed it as All-Love.

Seichim (or Sekhem in Egyptian) means in Sanskrit “the sacred might of the cosmic fire“.

What is specific to this Reiki system
  • New Age style.
  • The student is supported in making his or her own connection with the healing energy.
  • “Flowing meditations”, allowing and guiding the flow of energy.

Different people have worked with the SKHM energy, and different systems have evolved, including Seichim, Seichem, and Sekhem.

I felt it coming into my body. I could still hear the sound and the sound that I was hearing was that of my heart-beat. This sound had been transformed outside myself into the inside. Now it was transfixed right in my heart. For the whole night, I lay in meditation feeling the energy within my heart and feeling it move all the way through my body, just allowing myself to receive whatever else would come in.

Patrick Zeigler – History of Seichim, How it all began

23. Seichim

Patrick ZeiglerFounded by Patrick Zeigler, but taught by his students.

Seichem/Seichim Reiki type. There are no manuals and no standards set for Seichim. So the levels, mantras, symbols, and attunements will vary greatly.

What is specific to this Reiki system

25. Sai Baba Reiki

Kathleen Ann MilnerFounded by Kathleen Ann Milner and Marcy Miller (Kathleen’s student).

No longer practiced, because of legal matters involving using Satya Sai Baba‘s name – a famous Indian guru who passed away in 2011.

Western Reiki branch.

Kathleen and Marcy were feeling that something is missing in Takata’s Reiki, so they started to work on the spiritual plate. They said that there were challenging the symbols and attunements from the well-known Indian guru Satya Sai Baba. However, his organization – including Baba himself – stated that they knew nothing about Sai Baba Reiki and the name was not to be use anymore.

What is specific to this Reiki system
  • Four levels: two Practitioner Levels, and two Master Levels.
  • Level I Practitioner learns the Zonar, Halu, Harth, and Rama, and receives the Sai Baba I Attunements.
  • Level II Practitioner learns the Gnosa, Kriya, Iava, and Rama, and receives the Sai Baba II attunements.
  • Master Level I teaches the Om, Fire Serpent and Tibetan Daikomio, and how to perform the Level I Practitioner attunements.
  • In Master Level II the person receives the Sai Baba II attunement again.

All Karuna systems can trace their roots to this early work of Kathleen Milner. What is now Karuna Reiki® or Tera Mai® Reiki was previously known and taught as Sai Baba Reiki.

William Rand borrowed some new symbols for his own new Reiki system from different other Masters, including Marcy Miller (the Zonar, Halu and Harth symbols). Around 1995, Kathleen Milner was initially ordered to pay $60,000 to Rand, following a lawsuit. The conflict dissipated at the end behind close doors, and both split-up with their own registered trademarks and new Reiki systems, as described before.

26. Karuna Reiki®

William Lee RandFounded by William Lee Rand (lineage Mikao Usui – Chujiro Hayashi – Hawayo Takata – Phyllis Lei Furumoto – Carol Farmer – Leah Smith, and more…).

William Lee Rand – founder and president of the ICRT (International Center for Reiki Training) – developed the Usui/Tibetan Reiki in 1989, Karuna Reiki® in 1995, and Holy Fire in 2014.

Western Reiki type.

Several new symbols channeled by other Masters has been added. These Masters include Marcy Miller (founder of Sai Baba Reiki, with Kathleen Ann Miller), Kellie-Ray Marine, Pat Courtney, Catherine Mills Bellamont, and Marla Abraham.

What is specific to this Reiki system
  • Karuna Reiki® can be defined as the Reiki of Compassion.
  • It adds new symbols, came from other Reiki masters, with specific energies, unique to the system.
  • It includes chanting and toning the names of the symbols while giving a treatment, to deepen the healing process.
  • The vibration of the voice becomes a physical carrier wave for the Karuna Reiki® energy to travel on.
  • The healing energies penetrate more deeply into the cells and tissues of the clients body.
  • The chakras and auras of both the practitioner and client are opened more completely.
  • For Reiki teachers, with two attunements, four master symbols, and eight treatment symbols.

Development of Karuna Reiki® was not without some problems and conflicts in the Reiki community:

  • Indian guru Satya Sai Baba asked to stop using his name for Sai Baba Reiki, the original system’s name.
  • There has been a lawsuit against Kathleen Milner (developer of the similar Tera Mai® Reiki), who’s been initially ordered to pay $60,000 in damages.
  • Vincent Amador developed Karuna-Ki in reaction to the trademarking of Karuna Reiki® by William Rand.

I did not originally intend to create a new system of Reiki, but starting about 1989, I began being given non-Usui Reiki symbols and attunement techniques which were claimed to have benefit. I filed these symbols away along with the attunement processes that were included with some of them and also begin experimenting with some of them. After a number of years, I had quite a collection and many of my students began asking me about these “additional symbols” and wanting to know if they should use them.

Tera Mai® was later expanded into Tera Mai® Seichem (see below), by adding the elemental healing energies of Fire, Water and Air/Spirit to the original Reiki/Earth energy. So Seichem incorporates all four elemental healing rays of Earth, Air, Fire and Water.

29. Tera Mai® Seichem

Kathleen Ann Milner - Reiki TypesFounded by Kathleen Ann Milner.

Margarette Shelton taught Kathleen Milner the original Reiki system that Iris Ishakuru taught to Arthur Robertson. But she never took Usui Reiki classes. Her initial Tera Mai® Reiki system was later expanded into Tera Mai® Seichem.

Seichem/Seichim Reiki type, a clear infusion of the initial Tera Mai® system with Seichem/Seichim elements.

Kathleen developed initially the Tera Mai® system, combining her acquired Usui information with her own perception and beliefs. She later added three more elemental healing energies to the Earth, and created this new system.

What is specific to this Reiki type
  • Tera Mai® uses the elemental Earth/Reiki healing ray. Reiki is the Earth element.
  • Tera Mai® Seichem adds the elemental healing energies of Fire, Water and Air/Spirit.
  • Seichem incorporates all these four elemental healing rays of Earth, Air, Fire and Water.
  • The Fire energy is called Sakara, the Water is Sophi-El, Earth is Reiki and the duel ray of Air/Spirit is Angeliclight.
  • One can receive initiation/attunement into Tera Mai® Seichem and this enables one to channel all four elemental healing rays.
  • There is the option to receive an initiation/attunement into just Reiki and channel the elemental earth healing ray only.
  • The YOD initiation is said to connect the student to the energies of the Ark of the Covenant.
  • Among the non-traditional channeled symbols: Zonar, Harth, two Double CKRs, Halu, Iava, Sati, Shati.
  • Breath of fire technique, deprogramming, Reiki boost, and water ceremony.

Tera Mai® Seichem initiations were also given to me by Buddha. They pass on the healing energy of all 4 elemental forces. I have found that animals and children who are attuned into Tera Mai® get smarter! In the summer of 2004, I initiated my grandson, Tyler, who had had problems grasping the material in first and second grade. In third grade, he did much better in school and even had different friends. The only thing different between second and third grade was that the boy received the Tera Mai® Seichem I attunement!
